Hearing the Voice That Calls Your Name

“I have heard it all my life…
A voice calling a name I recognized as my own.
Saying:
Remember who you are
And let that knowing take you home.”

– Oriah Mountain Dreamer

Remember when you were a child and at the end of the day, your mother would come to the door and call your name, calling you home. Back to the place where you belonged, to the place that was safe, where you would be nourished and where you could rest. Then, the next day, you would go out on grand adventures again because you knew no matter how far you went eventually you would be called home.

We are all trying to find home. To find that place where we feel known, accepted, and appreciated for all of who we are. The place where we feel safe. The difference in our adult lives is that home now is not a physical street address. It is an emotional and spiritual place within us.

Today the voice that is calling us home is the great mother, the voice that knows how to take care of us and that cares about us. It is the wisdom that lies within each of us. The only question is “Can you hear the voice that calls your name?” Can you hear the voice that says “Remember who and what you really are.” And if you can hear it, do you listen?
If you will listen carefully , there is an inner voice that will wake you up to your life. It is a voice that will inform you and help you make all the decisions of your life. It is a voice that will guide you back home. To be guided by your inner wisdom, you have to stop moving, stop doing, and listen to yourself. In order to hear this voice, you have to get silent. You have to get still. You see, your deep, true inner voice comes first as a low, soft whisper. You can tell it is your inner wisdom becomes it always comes from the heart. The voice is sweet, loving, and kind…in the beginning.

However, if you don’t stop and listen, because your life is too busy or your anxieties are too great, the whisper tends to become louder. Then maybe it becomes a knock. And sometimes it becomes a ton of bricks falling on your head…or a sickness that forces you to slow down and listen.

You can learn to listen for this voice. You can withdraw from the busy-ness of your world and the busy-ness of your mind, even if only for a moment, to stop and breathe – to meditate. Meditation is the quieting of the mind so you can hear your own life speak to you. Meditation helps you reach a deeper place within yourself where you can bring forth new revelations and visions, deeper insights and healing, greater love and peace. Meditation will provide a roadmap to home.

The most basic intention of meditation is to get you to slow down and be quiet. This is difficult initially because turning your brain off takes focus and practice. There are many forms of meditation and many resources to help you develop a practice. A meditation can be a planned, practiced activity or it can occur as simply a spontaneous moment. Despite its power and significance, there is nothing really difficult about meditation. For most people, setting aside time on a regular schedule is very helpful. Perhaps you want to establish a goal of meditating for twenty minutes twice a day. Some days you may only meditate briefly. Really all you have to remember is to stop and be silent and

breathe….breathe….breathe….breathe…..

Take time to center yourself everyday – to go within – to let yourself hear the whisper. Listen, and let your life guide you to where you need to be. Let yourself hear the voice that calls your name, the voice that calls you home. Your life will begin to unfold differently.

When you are clear about who you are and then acting on who you really are….you will arrive at a place you will recognize, finally, as home. This is what is meant by living authentically. This is what is meant by being grounded. This is your center of gravity. This will feel like home. Then you will have the courage to go out everyday and have grand adventures because you know that you have a place to return to, to be nurtured and taken care of. Then you will have the direction, the energy, and the courage to be living the life of your dreams.

Who you are is so much more than what you do.

The bare and bold truth of you does not lie in your to-do list.
You are not the surface of your skin.
You are not your boundless energy or your bone wearying fatigue.

Delve deeper.

Who you are is love.

Remember who you really are. Live your life from this place. And then imagine, when we are all acting from this place of love…we will have found not only our homes, but we will have found a home for all humanity – a place where we all feel safe.
