Just Who Do You Think You Are?

.

There’s a reason the most dreaded interview question is
“Tell me about yourself?”
It’s the nagging feeling that,
despite all the self-help books out there,
we just don’t know as much as we could
about someone so close to home as ourselves.

Because of my work as a speaker and a teacher, I often receive grand introductions. I get to stand in front of people and have someone read out loud about the best of who I am, my accomplishments, my aspirations, and what I have to offer of value. I am always humbled by these beautiful introductions, even though 9 times out of 10, I write them.

Yes, I am the one who has to write all those positive and glowing (and hopefully truthful) things about myself.  I have to write about about what is most important to me and about my deepest passions and commitments.  It’s not always easy to do.  It’s work.  But it is extremely important work.  Because if you don’t know who you really are, what you stand for and what you want, then someone else will.

Could you write yours?  Think about it.

Pretend as if you are going to be introduced: Imagine writing a truthful, honest, and sincere introduction to your deepest and highest self. See yourself standing just off stage: What would you like to hear being read out loud about you?

Another version:  What would you say about yourself in an interview that would have a potential employer understand what your greatest assets are…the value you bring to your work? Take a few minutes to stop and think about what you would say.  This is very important because this is the stuff that guides your life.  Knowing who you are is necessary for designing the life that you want.

Ooh, what a grand question! I have a friend who writes her own eulogy each year on her bday to remind herself of who she is… Me? I am a renaissance woman! I am knowledge-thirsty; always learning; a voracious reader; an extraordinarily lucky mom; a happy wife, daughter, sister and aunt; a loyal friend; a hard worker who enjoys all that I do immensely; and a stalwart advocate of authors trying to deliver their own passionate messages into the world. Enjoying the ride… I am! Shari

You nailed it! Have you done this exercise before? Doesn’t it feel good to reel off your beautiful attributes like that?
