I Don’t Know…What Do You Think?

Want to be a good friend, partner, parent, co-worker?   Want to be the kind of sister, girlfriend, wise woman who truly knows how to give wind to someone’s wings?  Want to be an Empowerment Goddess?  Here’s how. It’s actually pretty simple.

When someone asks you what you think they should do, say or feel, simply respond,

“I don’t know.  What do you think?”

Now if the question is “Where is the grocery story?”  Well, you can answer that.

However, when the questions are  “What do you think I should do about my lover, my work, my money, my emotions, my dreams?”  Don’t bite.

Resist the urge to answer the intimate questions of other’s lives.  This is not easy.  It feels rude not to directly answer a direct question.  Besides we want to help.  We have opinions and ideas.  And people want us to tell them the best way to think and feel.  Right?

But, honestly, how in the world could you ever know someone else’s answers?  And think about this, are you willing to take responsibility for the decisions you suggest?

When someone you love is struggling with an important question in their lives, learn to resist the request to fix it, or the urge to share your story.  At least in the beginning.  You might share later, but for now, that’s not the job you want.  For now, you want to say,

“I don’t know.  What do you think?”

The most wonderful feeling in the world is when you can help someone tap into their own answers, wisdom, power, and responsibility.  It’s magical.  You can actually see someone grow before your eyes.

Remember when Glenda the Good Witch told Dorothy that she had her own answers all along!

Be Glenda the Good Witch.  Tell someone that they have  their own answers and that they always will.   Help them learn how to tap into their own power.  Be an Empowerment Goddess with a magic wand.

When asked important personal questions, an Empowerment Goddess will simply say,

“I don’t know …but you do.”

“I don’t know the answers to the intimate and important questions of your life.  What I do know is that I believe that you know.  As your friend, I will hold a safe space for you to ask and answer your own questions.  I will even help by asking some of the questions.

I will encourage you  to know that you are smart, wise, and courageous enough to know your own truth, your own answers.

Then, when you are clear, grounded, and empowered with your own wisdom and vision – I will support you in your choices and I will hold that vision for you.”

This is the work I do with women.  In my classes and retreats, we learn how to be “sister coaches” for each other.   We learn how to not only be powerful women in our own lives, but also how to be Empowerment Goddesses for others.

But again, it’s really simple.  Just remember, the next time you feel tempted to tell someone what to do, stop, resist, take a deep breath, smile with confidence for them, and say,

“I don’t know.  What do you think?”

Powerful Questions:

Are you an Empowerment Goddess?

Do you know how to help other’s explore and realize their own glory?

Do you know how to create a space of deep questioning and deep listening?
